A Catch of Shadows Theatre Company History

This is the fourth production of A Catch of Shadows Theatre Company which was started in 1996 by Laura Wilson, a former AFE student. She penned her first play, "Keys to Camebrien", which she produced and directed in 1996. In 1997 Laura wrote "Gate of the Winds" based on Celtic mythology which was produced in cooperation with AFE last spring at Louden Nelson Theatre. Having a long standing love of Shakespeare, last fall Laura directed older students in A Catch of Shadows and AFE production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" performed at the Harbor High Theatre and will be doing a similar production of "A Midsummer's Night Dream" next fall.

Laura's involvement in theatre began with her mother's improvisational theatre classes for children. They would improvise endings to original scripts and perform them at events such as Earth Day. It was her frustration in finding substantive plays written for children and the desire to work with other students who, like herself, were serious about the dramatic arts and wanted to work together to create high quality productions which led to the birth of A Catch of Shadows Theatre Company. All who audition for the spring productions are given a part and can designate what they are particularly interested in doing. The productions have involved music as well as dance and all cast members are encouraged to help in costuming and set building.

The results have been outstanding. A Catch of Shadows Theatre Company's superb productions have had the enthusiastic participation of a large group of mostly homeschool students who attend multiple weekly rehearsals, sew costumes, design and construct sets and deliver fine performances under Laura's excellent direction. Judy Reveaux-Wright has offered production skills as part of AFE and Bill Wright has volunteered his time to help with musical production. Community businesses have shown their support by placing ads in the programs.

Laura currently attends Cabrillo College and plans to enroll in San Jose State's Theatre program. She also wants to earn a teaching credential and continue working with children and the dramatic arts in an alternative educational setting. This enterprise is a real testament to what a motivated student in an open learning situation with family and community support can accomplish and bring to others. Come see the results.
