Welcome!
Sonic With A Gun, by Violet CLM, is a mod (graphics, enemies, and level design) of the first episode of Epic Megagames' 1994 DOS game Jazz Jackrabbit in the style of the first three zones of SEGA's 1991 Genesis/Megadrive game Sonic the Hedgehog. Currently only the first three zones -- a full episode for Jazz 1, and half the game for Sonic 1 -- are planned, since the complexity of recreating (or approximating) the "gimmicks" of the original Sonic zones increases as the game goes on.
All elements of the mod are to be seen as a remake: none of the original graphics or level design from Sonic 1 are present, and instead the graphics are edited from Jazz 1 art and the level design is a hybrid between the styles of the two games. Enemies and other level objects are included as accurately as possible within the constraints of the Jazz 1 engine, with occasional new additions or modifications in the spirit of either the original or the mod.
Two prominent differences between the gameplays of Sonic and Jazz are that the former can run up walls, ceilings, etc., and the latter has a gun and disposes of enemies with it rather than by jumping on them. These differences remain in Sonic With A Gun, which features the standard ammunition types from Jazz 1. Perhaps the best way to think about this mod is as Jazz visiting the equivalents of the Sonic zones but in the Jazz Jackrabbit universe.
In this demo only the first third of the mod, planet Hillgrius, is playable; it features two levels, three gun types (including the basic blaster), and six enemy types (plus a boss). Goodies hidden in the levels include two extra lives, two hip-hops, and one bonus level gem.
To install this mod, unzip all the files into your main Jazz 1 directory, first making a backup of all the files that will be overwritten, and then play episode 1 ("Turtle Terror") at any difficulty level. If you do not have Jazz 1 installed on your current computer, this mod is compatible with the shareware version, which can be downloaded from Haze's Hideout. Note: Depending on your computer, you may need to use DOSBox to run it. If you have neither Jazz 1 nor DOSBox installed, and want to download everything at once, download the complete package and run SWAG.bat. Playing under the open-source "OpenJazz" remake of Jazz 1 is not recommended since these levels will only run in the latest versions and even then only very glitchily.
Thank you for playing Sonic With A Gun as part of your SAGE experience. I appreciate all feedback in the appropriate Sonic Fan Games HQ forum topic. For more information on modding Jazz 1, please see J1E or JJ1MOD on Jazz 2 Online.
